Image

Fated To Follow - a short story

Image
Fated To Follow  Ghalia was standing just above her future grave.  That morning when she awoke she had been reminded of her father. Throughout their Cairo summers, he would  involuntarily allow  the sounds of a waking city to rouse him every morning. As they seeped through the windows he would grudgingly sit up on the bed and remain there for the longest time. His bare feet, sticking out of stripy  pajama  bottoms, would be placed firmly on the floor and his barely open eyes would seemingly study them. His face, always the face of an old man to her - would be set into a particular kind of resolve: must keep the day at bay for a little longer, shut life away for just that short while longer.  She had done the same that morning. And as her own feet, veined and masculine and a source of horrible teenage anguish, sat on the floor awaiting orders, she wondered what her father would really be thinking at times like these. He obviously ...

I wanna be like my daddy

Image
I wanna be like my daddy, Go out at a whim, No questions asked, Anywhere, Anytime. Then come back home, With a head, All cleared, Load shed. And with a bag of fresh bread. ................................................................................... I wanna be like my father. Run a small black comb, All wet, Through my silk-soft locks, Of silvering hair. There you go, All set. Just so. No sweat, No bother. ........... While in the mirror there's a watching daughter ....................................................................... I wanna be like my daddy, Smell of soap and Old Spice. Find the time to look nice. Look groomed, All the time. Shirt pressed, All the time, Nails cut teeth brushed shoes buffed, All the time. ................................................................... I wanna go for drawn-out walks Along deserty paths, In moonlit nights. No threatening thoughts, ...

Honestly!

Image
Honestly! Was the city insanely glamorous? Did people bow to each other on the streets? Was it great fun  to move with ease from a fabulous A to a stunning B? Did not many loved ones let her down? was she not a stranger  -sometimes in her hometown? Was the whole thing an absolute blast? That it was! Busy mad noisy wild polluted chaotic REAL Did she not say to herself out loud Of an evening "I am basking in unregulated bliss" Whatever that means Then why, Exactly, has her heart stayed behind in Cairo Way down there, Underneath all the clouds?

My London

Image
As the plane approached Heathrow, green fields duly materialised and a whole decade came back to me: the virgin discovery of the seasons, the walking, cars being driven by no one, no wait, the driver is sitting on the other side, the marathon shifts, the 06.30 waits at bus stops in torrential rain, the 06.30 waits at bus stops in torrential rain and then missing the only bus for that hour because the book was too engrossing, the snow flakes flying towards my face from all directions, crazy and impossibly beautiful, making one stubbornly-non-morning person very cheerful indeed, the post-nightshift journey home on a Sunday morning and carefully sidestepping vomit on the pavement, the etiquette of queueing and the painstaking measurement of personal space, the agony of giving birth au naturel because centuries of medical advancement have taught us it's best to demedicalise labour, the joy of baby music lessons, slugs, ...
